APPLICANTS

How do I apply?

You will need to fill out a preliminary application.  You will be placed on a waiting list.  When your name reaches the top of the list, you will be notified by mail.

How long will it take to receive rental assistance?

The time frame will vary depending on how many people are on the waiting list.  The most important thing to remember is to provide NHHFA with your current mailing address so we can contact you.  Changes in address can be reported to changeofaddress@nhhfa.org .

Help…I need housing now.  What can I do to receive assistance sooner?

NHHFA administers a small Emergency Housing Program designed to assist eligible households with short term assistance for rental payments when municipalities are unable to offer assistance. Participants must be a New Hampshire resident and must be in imminent danger of eviction due to financial difficulty. Complete the Emergency Rental Assistance Declaration Form.

While you are on the waiting list, we recommend the following:

  • New Hampshire Housing publishes a Directory of Assisted Housing that lists the affordable housing in the State.  Applicants can apply to more than one housing authority or property.

  • First, you need to get written approval from your landlord.
  • Do not have the person move in until you have received approval from New Hampshire Housing.
  • Attach the landlord's written approval to the Interim Change Form and mail it to:  NHHFA, P.O. Box 5087, Manchester, NH  03108.
  • Forms will be sent to you so that we can proceed with the approval process.

What do I do if I want to move?

  • Contact your Program Monitor.
  • You must submit a written 30-day notice in writing to the landlord and to New Hampshire Housing.
  • When you have found a new unit, complete the Request for Tenancy Approval with the new landlord and send it to New Hampshire Housing.  The new landlord must also complete a Form W-9.
  • The Request for Tenancy Approval should be received on or before the 20th of the month.  Moves are generally effective on the 1st day of the month.
  • New Hampshire Housing will determine if the unit qualifies.  You cannot pay more than 40% of your monthly adjusted income for rent and utilities.  If the rent is within these program requirements, an inspection will be scheduled.
